Raid for 1TB and 500GB hard drive

Can I do this, and if so, is it a good idea? Or should I stick to two 500GB drives?

I currently have a 500GB drive and am in the market for extra space but I'm interested in something a little bigger than what I currently have, for my second drive.

Well, you will get extra space because you are buying another HD. The thing is, if you get a 1 tb and raid 0 it with the 500, it will treat it like 2 500 drives. So if you are going to be using these two drives for only Raid, there is no reason to get the 1 tb because you will be losing half of the drive.

It is not recommended to use raid0 (speed increase) for storing any data, at all.
You want a faster drive, buy a faster drive. Also, consider selling existing drive and using the money towards buying a larger replacement drive.
