raid, dynamic disk and formatting

I created 2 disks with my raid controller- one is a single disk in "JBOD" mode and nother is a radi1 disk. I created partitions on them but when I got to format them it hangs on format - the progress bar bever goes anywhere and it will finally tell me that the disk cannot be formatted. I've done a low-level format and re-created the raid sets and does same thing. Am i missing something?
