RAID drive replacement

Hey everyone,

I've got a Raid 5 setup with 4 250gb WD 2500SD (Raid Edition). I had one drive go down and I can't seem to get a hold of a 2500SD replacement. Everyone I've tried to buy from say's it's no longer stocked and would like to offer me a 2500YD instead. Will it be ok to use the YD instead seeing as the cache and interface is double on the YD?

Thanks for your help!

if the new drive is smaller by 1 byte you will have a problem, if the sizes are identical or the new drive is bigger you will probably never notice the difference (assuming your RAID card supports JBOD)

The controller is a 3ware Escalade 8000 series. 8506-4LP (0,1,10,5,JBOD)

The current drives are 250gb and the replacement will also be a 250gb. The only difference is the current drives are 1.5gbs transfer w/ 8mb buffer and the replacement would be a 3.0gbs transfer w/ 16mb buffer.

It will physicaly work, although as already noted if the new drive is any smaller the card will try to rebuild to the smallest drive. This is why its smart to make the array a bit smaller than the full capacity of the disk. Sometimes drive MB can vary by (I'd imagine) as much as maybe a hundred MB or so. Just make sure to backup first, but I'd imagine you won't have a problem.
