I know that there are a lot of questions in this one post, but I need to make sure that there are no issues with this setup before I start putting money into it. I'm looking to set up a RAID 5 IDE array with 8 hard drives. I'll be using Western Digital 800JB hard drives. For those who've been living deep in the wilderness, those are the 80GB versions of their Special Edition hard drives with 8MB of cache. I know that Promise doesn't make a card that can run an 8 disk RAID 5 Array, and Highpoint doesn't even have an IDE card that supports RAID 5. Are there any manufacturers that support RAID 5 across 8 drives? Is it technically feasible? If not feasible with one card, how hard would it be to set it up with two controllers? Does anyone know of any problems with Windows 2000? With my current comp, (PII 450, Intel 440BX chipset mobo, board natively supports ATA/66) I have to install Win 2k on a hard drive connected straight to the motherboard, install all of the neccessary drivers and service packs, and then connect it to my ATA100 controller. When I get a board that natively supports ATA133 will this problem go away? How hard will it be to set up a bootable drive? What are the steps involved with setting up 8 blank drives, setting the boot partition, and installing an OS? Any issues there? I really appreciate any help you all can give me as I clearly would not like to spend that kind of money and then have it all not work.
