RAID controller cards

Hi, I am not an expert on RAID. But I know that it is using 2 or more hard drives to store and read data. My question:

In order for a RAID setup, does one need a RAID compatible motherboard or if the mother board does not have RAID bilt on it, can you add on another internal RAID controller or something? Are RAID controller cards a common use or is it just some thing that some manufacturers make for those who do not have a RAID motherboard, taht is, if I have a motherboard which I think is not RAID compatible, then does that mean that it is better to build a new system with RAID compatibility or is it better to get a RAID card and 2 extra hard drives?
Also, what is the main difference in terms of physical architecture between a RAID compatible motherboard and one taht does not support RAID?

If you want to go RAID you can get an addon Card without splurging for a whole new Rig...I suggest you search this Forum for more info as there are a lot of varibles to RAIDing
