Hello all, I'm trying to gauge what would be the best option for a non-enterprise class budget for raid controller.
What is currently the best onboard raid solution? Matrix, ICH9R, MCP55P, etc...?
I've had some nasty experiences with nvRaid on MCP55P recently as far as raid 1 array rebuilding only through a windows driver and not through the bios and freezing. Afterwards i read about nvraid being the cause of many problems.
All onboard controllers i have come across have been hardware, but none have been able to pass SMART data through the controller for monitoring. After some (a lot) research i found myself in a pickle. the Areca ARC-1210 is upwards of $300 while the Highpoint 2310 looks ideal at $140 and SMART capable...although i dont know if that means i'll be able to read the smart data through the winXP driver (i hope). Is there something good i should look at/consider for 2-4 drives in between those two for under $200
I have heard good things about some (Matrix, sil3114r) bad things about others (nvRaid, ICH7)...but not recently.
My intended setup is 2x150GB WD Raptors in Raid1....possibly raid5 with 3x drives.
is raid5 a good idea for boosting performance, if so on which controllers? i've read awful things about ICH7 performance.
I have also read about if your MB dies, but you have an add-in card for RAID, you keep your array...etc. Is this for recovery or can you swap out motherboards under the controller without a winXP reinstall?
please give specifics on the chipsets/part numbers when referencing controllers.
so many questions....
thanks,
Leon
