If this was SCSI RAID, no problem.
Since it's not, I would NOT recommend using different drives! Why? SCSI devices must adhere to ANSI standards, where there are no [strict] standards with ATA devices. This is precisely why different brand disks have different characteristics from one another when in an array. When you use two different disks, even though their sizes and spindle speed are the same, you risk problems. Problems could range from lockups, data corruption, data loss, poor performance, unreliable performance, etc. For experimental purposes, it may be worth it.
