RAID array and swapping controllers

I'm in the process of building a new system and want to include a 2-drive RAID array for storing my digital photos. I've been looking at the ASUS K8V and was planning on 1 160 GB EIDE drive (OS, programs) and 2 160 GB SATA drives (storage). The two SATA drives would be RAID 1 using the on-board controller.

I assume that when the time comes I'll be able to swap the drives to a new RAID controller without any problems, but figured I'd check. I haven't seen this specifically address (probably too stupid a question) and thought I'd ask.

I'm at 40 GB of photos now and shoot ~ 3 GB per month. I'm backing up to CD right now (way too many CDs) but will start backing up to DVD soon. Having redundant HDDs in addition to the physical backups will let me sleep easier at night.

Thanks!

I have never played with raid 1, but since all it is is mirroring, you might be able to simply put the "copy" disk in any computer and have it work by itself, or if the next computer has the same chip (promise I think ?) then it would work also.

BTW welcome to the forums, and the K8V is a great motherboard.

Thanks a bunch.

I assumed as much, but you never know. I've been reading Anand for years (4?) just never bothered to actually register and post 🙂
