Raid? and what size HD's to get

Is Raid a must for on-line gaming and if so what size Harddrives should be used? Do they have to be the same size and make? Right now I have an 8 and a 14 and I have not come close to filling them up. They are both old and slow so I would like to replace them. I am thinking 2 40's would work just fine. Or is Raid a waste of time and should I just get one 60 or 80 gig HD? Thx for your help
