RAID access failure preventing defrag

I've been getting a RAID access failure on one of my disks using a RAID 0 array for some time now. When I have the Nvidia disk monitor running it gives me an error every now and then and I am not able to defrag without a crash. The weird thing is that I have no other problems with the array ever.
Everything functions flawlessly and I can game and abuse my machine for weeks or longer without a reboot but as soon as I try to defrag the machine crashes. I have tried several defrag utilities and I've even tried booting to another OS. Vista just tells be there is an error and stops the defragmentation process. What is going on here? Why can I do everything else but defrag? It's getting rather annoying because it's been a good six months and my drive is a mess and no longer resembles a nice speedy RAID 0. I'm having a difficult time picturing what is happening with the drive.
