O.P.

Hi all,

I'm looking into setting myself up with a Raid 5 storage solution for my computer. My current motherboard only has 4 SATA slots, and I'm using them all already, for my DVD drive, a 500Mb drive, and 2x 1TB drive. Sad as it is, I'm out of space.

What i'm aiming to do, is set up a Raid 5, using at least 4, or 5 1Tb (maybe 1.5Tb drives). I want to store all my movies, music, and other stuff that I don't want to lose. So i'll be accessing it occasionally, but only writing to it when new data is ready for storage. I'm thinking Raid 5, because I want the security of redundancy. I may even have a hot swap drive in there just to make sure I'm safe.

My PC setup:
Asus motherboard K5N (I think?)
600W PSU
8800GTS Video
E8400 Intel CPU
1x 500Gb drive
2x 1Tb drives
4Gb 800Mhz ram

I plan on having my 500Gb drive as my boot volume and maybe 1 of the 1TB drives as a temp drive, for stuff that's not vital, and only using the Raid volume for long term storage. Stuff that I really don't want to lose. I would need at least 3Tb or more in the Raid volume, preferably 4Tb so I'm a little bit future proof.

So my question is this: What is the easiest way to do this? Do I buy a new motherboard, new case (Mine's a midi tower) and a new PSU. Or do I buy an external solution? Or a Raid controller card to add to my current PC? Any recommendations? Has anyone done this before?

* To access and protect your media the way you've described, something like the Synology DS408 NAS is what you need.
Toss in 4 x WD 1TB "Black" or RE3 drives and you're good to go!
