RAID-5 on SiI 3114

Hi all,

I have recently done a big (and final) upgrade on my aging AMD64 X2 4800+ machine. It uses a Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-9 motherboard. Onboard are two RAID controllers. One is an nVidia controller that only does RAID 0 and 1. Not problem there. I have my boot drives (stripped) connected that and another two drives.

Also on board is a SiI 3114 RAID controller. I added 4 x 1T drives hoping to create a nice big RAID-5 drive. The BIOS setup will give me a RAID-5 setup with 3 drives, but as soon as I include the 4th, it goes to about 750 something gig.

I tried various things in Windows (64-bit) and have finally managed to get the Windows driver updated to a more recent version (via Silicon Image web site). I also managed to find a utility / driver / whatever on the site that creates RAID drives (including 5). It takes about 16 hours to create.

Finally this afternoon I had the created drive. Question is how do I get Windows to see it? All Windows sees is one 1T drive and not the array.

This thing is really giving me hassles. I cannot seem to get the BIOS upgraded either via DOS.

With that amount of storage space, I am very hesitant to make it simply a spanned drive. You can forget stripped. Just too much chance of loosing data (all of it).

Any ideas or suggestions?

You are seeing the 2 TB partition limit in NTFS. You need to use GUID Partition Tables (GPT) in place of the standard Master boot Record (MBR) partition tables. Note that you can't boot to a GPT partition.
