RAID 5 confusion for a newbie

Hi,

I'm thinking of turning a file server of mine into a RAID 5 file server. It already has two 60 GB drives (different manufacturers, but same speeds) and I have recently come across a third 60 GB drive.

The file server system is an HP prebuilt PC that I have been mucking around with for a while. I don't know if the motherboard supports RAID because I can't even identify it in System Information...

...but I do have a Promise Ultra 100 TX2 controller card. Is it RAID 5 compatible? I have no clue... and Promise's site isn't being very helpful.

Now, from what I am reading about RAID 5, I am unsure how to proceed from here. I assume hardware control is the best. I also am confused about the master/slave situation of RAID 5. For optimal placement, you want all of the drives to be masters. Does it pose a security issue to have two disks as IDE Masters on the Promise card and one in the HP motherboard as IDE Master? Or do you want all of the drives attached to Controller cards?

Basically, I am very confused about setting up RAID 5 on this damn thing. I don't want to have to buy an expensive RAID 5 controller card if I can get away with decent peformance (and redundancy) with what I have.

Please let me know! Thanks.

RAID 5 requires a pretty decent RAID card designed specifically with RAID 5 in mind. This is because of the constant parity information calculations that the card must carry out - it needs a good processor on it.
Check out Froogle for RAID 5 cards. Or click this link to Newegg and look at the card pictures. Powerful processor, and space for a stick of RAM.
And, there's the Anandtech FAQ on RAID.
