RAID 5 benchies?

Some of you have some nice RAID5 arrays out there and I'd like to see what they're capable of doing. Pics would be nice. I wanna setup 8 seagate 10k.6's (36GB) 1 being a hotspare with a Megaraid Elite 1600 controller and was just wondering how fast it would be. Thanks.

What platform? The E1600 is much better on 64/66 PCI.

Expect reads in the 95 range and writes in the 18 range (cache off) or 80/55 with cache on.

At 64/66 reads with that many disks will run close to 200 and writes 25. With cache on (WB) expect reads of 145 and writes of 80.

Cheers!

Yeah It'd be on 32bit pci unless over the summer I happen to upgrade to a dual xeon server board(which I want to do). 🙂

I know RAID5 isn't going to be as fast as RAID0 but how does it compare? This would be an array to store my data that I'd like to keep. 🙂 I think I'm gonna try to get a hold of a tape backup. Any suggestions?

Is this going to be used for a server or workstation?

Hot spare is not necessary in the latter.

The controllers are intelligent storage devices and will perform much faster than host based RAID any day.

Cheers!

I already have an Inline 8 bay external enclosure that I have 3 of these 10k.6 drives in right now along with a tag along maxtor 15k and this isn't a hot swap application. Why wouldnt a hot spare be a good idea? If a drive in a raid 5 crashes can u shut it down and replace the drive and boot it back up? If that's the case then I guess a hotspare wouldn't matter. Yeah this is a workstation application...so far.

What's the ratio of usable storage space compared to the actual amount of all the drives combined? Is it 2/3's?

Thanks for the help so far.

With RAID5 it's the sum of all drives less one drive. Three minimum...

The hotspare allows auto rebuild if your backplane supports this feature (SAF-T) and is recommended for servers where uptime is critical.

On a workstation, the extra drive is better used to assist with capacity than availability.

Cheers!
