I'm preparing to build my next system and am hoping to consolidate my storage between my other systems (2x120Gb, 180Gb, 200Gb & 300Gb HDDs.)
Using my 300Gb Maxtor SATA as the basis I'm going to buy 2 more and build a RAID 5 array.
My questions are:
1) Because we can lock the PCI-E bus this shouldn't cause a problem in the array while overclocking?
2) I have experience with RAID 5 arrays but I have never had a drive failure, so have no experience of replacing/rebuilding an array. I assume you don't have to replace the drive with a same model - just something similiar with an equivalent/larger capacity?
3) If the motherboard fails you have to get the same setup or you will not be able to access the array? And/Or if you upgrade the motherboard can you to take the array with you? (Same question really).
4) On the systems I have used (Dell servers) you can boot off the array but I have noticed people building RAID 0 & 1 systems with an array as well as a single disk any reason why?
