Raid 1

Are the RPMs the same? Probably not, and I don't think you'll have much luck if the spindles won't synch.
 
It'll work, but you will be limited to the size of the Raptor. There are probably going be some wierd performance issues with having a faster and a slower drive. Even when you have identical drives, there is going to be variations on how fast they are actually spinning, where they started, etc.

I know that most controllers can deal with differently sized drives -- it just treats them all as if they're the size of the smallest drive in the set, and any extra space is ignored.

In fact, you can use this behavior in supporting RAID controllers to expand a RAID5, RAID1, or RAID0+1 configuration online, by swapping out one drive at a time for a higher-capacity one and then updating the array size once all the new drives are in place.

That's all nice and fine for half way decent SCSI RAID (or proper SATA RAID) solution w. sufficient cache and a dedicated proc.
I'm thinking that he is talking of some onboard software raid solution, and then the comp has to do a lot of work to keep the drives synced. I foresee problems in intensive tasks and a huge slowdown in performance...

And anyway, it is recommended by manufacturers not to mix different speed drives or even ones w. different cache size.

EDIT: What I mean is, it will work but I highly recommend against it!
