I want to run two Maxtor 80 GB hard drives together as RAID 1. One has an 8MB cache, and the other only has a 2 MB cache. Will I lose performance from the one with the 8 MB cache?

Would it be better to just put them on RAID 0 and do nightly backups of my important information to a third drive?

Thanks,

I doubt you'd see any loss due to the different cache sizes. You might see a slight performance loss if both drives are on the same channel and have to share bandwidth.

There is a difference. Go to www.storagereview.com and compare identical drives with different caches, it makes a difference.

Basically, you'll be running both drives at a speed as if they were both 2mb cache drives. Going Raid 0 or 1 is completely dependent on your liking and not as much of a compatibility issue.

For Raid 0, unless you have some good way of backing up data as in the software doig it on its own every night, it'll be a huge pain.

Personally, I'd go Raid 0 because with Raid 1, you won't notice much if any at all performance differences.
