RAID 1 with non identical drives (same size)

So I jumped on the Seagate 1TB drive on Amazon last week ($41.03 shipped) and wanted to do a RAID 1. I was going to buy the next 1TB drive I found on the cheap. Can I do a RAID 1 with non identical drives? I figure it'd go with the space of the smaller of the drives, which is fine. I've read that it's possible, but found just as much info saying they need to be identical drives.

Any help would be swell. Thanks!

It's best to have identical specifications. They don't have to be the same brand, however it would help give more consistent and predictable performance.

You'd have to specify what form of raid you want to use: software (which OS?), hardware, fake-raid (those cheap raid cards that really do it in the driver) to get a better answer on the different sized drives.
