RAID 1 Question...

Assume I've got a RAID 1 setup through a hardware controller and one of the disks for some inexplicable reason, fails. I can't resurrect it. The other disk is fine. Do I simply isolate the bad disk with some utility and swap out the bad one with a new disk of a similar type/brand/etc. and go along my merry way or is some other more complex solution required?

I only ask because I set up a $500 RAID array on my friend's computer and am definitely going to be the one he calls if something goes fubar.
