RAID 1 NAS and recovering a deleted file

Today on BOB'S SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS....

Here's the skinny on today's battle, I have a client who contacted me about an excel file going missing of of their NAS drive. The NAS is a Synology DS216j that has two 2TB hard drives setup in RAID 1.
Now I'm certain that one the 3 people who use the computers there mostly deleted by mistake but during the course of checking the NAS out I also found the mirror drive was showing as degraded and failing. You know just to make things more interesting.

So I've got replacing the failing drive covered, done that portion before, but has anyone ever done data recovery on a NAS with RAID?
