RAID 1- fact checking and DNS-323 NAS

Wanted to pose this question while I search the web and forums.
In a RAID 1 configuration (NAS), if I remove one of the hard drives and place it into a single hard drive enclosure am I correct in reading that I will be able to access the data on this hard drive without issue?
I've read a few places that sort of half mention this but I wanted to hear from someone who has don't this before, before I try it myself.

Second piece and this kind of ties in with my last question, has any here taken a Dlink DNS-323 and hooked it up to a PC and been able to access the data like a standard external hard drive? I'm scouring the manual for it now and looking online but it mentions being a print server and does backups through this interface but nothing about direct USB access.
