Raid 1 Drive Replacement

I just bought a replacement for one of my SATAs, which is throwing an error that the SMART functions isn't right. However, it doesn't seem to be causing any problems at the moment. I hate wasting anything, and since it is in a raid 1 array, if it failed, I could install the replacement then, without risking anything...couldn't I? Then again, I guess I should go ahead and install the new drive, if for no other reason that to ensure that it is okay. If I do that, what should I do with the old drive...put it in the closet until I get a pair for a secondary array, or ?
 
Since you have the drive already, I'd just keep it handy.
No reason to replace anything until you start having problems.
 
I'm thinking along the same lines as you, but I guess that I would just have to gamble that the new drive is good.
I've started wondering if there is a program that can fix SMART problems, like Harddrive Regenerator or SpinRite do with bad sectors?
 
You could install the new drive,
Let your RAID controller rebuild the "1" array,
Reformat the questionable drive and hold on to it as a spare.
