RAID 0 With Backup

In my PC I have two 80gb HDD's (kind of redundant now) so am considering putting them in RAID 0 to make them faster and give me 160gb or storage in one place. However the data I am considering putting on these hard drives is really important stuff like work my holiday photos etc.. things I wouldn't want to lose.

What is the best way of backing this RAID 0 set-up up? I would like to use 1+0 but this means buying another two redundant 80gb drives, is there anyway I can do this with a 160gb or is it possible to just have acronis or similar make regular backups of the drive and save them to one of my other HDD's?

If you want your 160GB, you need an external backup or RAID 1+0 w/ additional drives, as you mentioned.

*edit* or if your mobo supports it (which is kinda unlikely, i guess) RAID 5 would only require 1 additional drive.

You just need one more drive to use for backups..
At the cost of 500gig drives these days $60, it might be best to just use one of those to back up the raid...

What I learned here is raid 1 is not for backups its for data servers that cant affort to go down..

your 80gb HDDs will be put to shame by any of the newer high density HDDs such as the WD 640gb or seagate 500gb(single platter) drives. if what you're looking for is performance, it's time for an upgrade.

even if you don't need the space, the speed is much better.
