I want to raid two of my new WD 30 GB hd's. now i have a few questions.

1. do i set both HD's as Master if i want to raid 0 them?

2. i obviously can't install an OS on there till i get raid set up right? does that happen in the ez bios?

well, those are good to start i guess.

my plan is to first setup the raid then to copy using wd ez install program everything from my current hd to my raid setup.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

well first, get a good raid controller if you want to do it right, like the 3ware 6200 or something. yes they would both master, you wouldnt want to have more than one drive on a RAID channel. i suggest you read up on raid, check out http://www.storagereview.com they have a very indepth guide/howto/article/book thing on RAID technology,.. good luck..

Hello there,

I had the same kind of questions B4 I set up my Raid0 array. I see you're using the onboard raid controller on your mobo; that's good to go. I'm using my onboard as well.

1. Set both drives (jumper on the drive) to master
2. One drive, and ONLY one drive on each channel, make sure the HD is connected to the first connector on the IDE cable.
3. Go into the bios, or more specifically, the Raid bios (it's a separate bios on my Abit KT7R, it's prolly separate on your MSI as well) and setup a Raid 0 array. Make sure the Bios sees both drives.
4. Use Norton Ghost or another Image program to copy everything (your OS/proggys/games/files) from your single HD to the Raid array. This is exactly what I did and it turned out fine.
5. Run Scandisk and defrag on the array immediately after copying all the info.
6. Crack a beer and pat yourself on the back.

Feel free to PM me if you need help. I'll do my best. Good luck. :)

platinum, if you are indeed running w2k pro or nt4, as your sig says "windows professional" then step 4 will NOT work.

you have to install w2k from scratch, and when prompted for a SCSI controller drivers, pop in your raid controller's drivers (FLOPPY ONLY) disk.

w2k will fart on you if you use ghost or equiv, to restore a previous install on the RAID.

when in dos, the array will appear as a single drive. you can use fdisk or what not to partition as you wish, and format, ntfs aside of course.

do not touch the western digital software AT ALL.

thx, ya. i don't change my signature everytime i change os cause i do it so frequently. currently i'm using windows me. but i think the western digital utility will do ok. i also have partition magic if need be.

ok

both masters worked for the striping part, using fastrack lite.

now WD's ez-install won't recognize the partition and i can't seem to get partition magic to make the copy. :(. i don't wanna have to reinstall everything. :(
