RAID 0 On One IDE Port

Hi,

It's been a while since my computer had an upgrade so I thought I'd give it one this x-mas.

I would like to know how the performance of RAID 0 on one IDE port is compared to RAID 0 on two separate IDE ports. I am planning to change my mobo (VIA 266A) to a nForce2 mobo after reading the shootout article here. I decided to go with the Chaintech board. When I was reading about the mobos I was hoping to find one with IDE RAID but none of them had it and the closest was the Chaintech. I plan to do this with two IBM 120GXPs.

If the performance takes a big hit, should I go for a more stripped down mobo and buy a separate RAID controller card? Reason is, I already have a sound card so any onboard sound would just be disabled. A more stripped down mobo would save me a fair amount money.

Or should I just all out ignore the nForce2 and wait for something big in the future?

Since both drives have to be able to operate simultaneously for RAID-0, and only one drive at a time can operate on a single IDE channel, you have to use two channels. Add-on RAID cards are cheap and offer more modes of usage than some on-board ones (RAID 0, 1, 0+1, JABOD, etc.).
