RAID 0 benefits over a LAN?

I plan on building a RAID 0 array on a system which I do a lot of video editing. If I were accessing/writing data (video editing) on that RAID 0 array from another computer on the same network, would it still be fast? I guess I mean to say, would the network slow it down?

Unless you have many users accessing the RAID over the network at the same time, then yes the network will slow the RAID down. I don't think you'd be able to do video editing over a 100mbps network, although 1000mbps would probably work.

The only cheap way I can think of to make this work would be to get 2 1000mbps network cards, and put one in the video editing machine and one in the RAID machine and connect the two with a crossover cable. Otherwise you'd have to get a 1000mbps switch, which probably won't be very cheap.

Hmm? Thanks. I guess if I go ahead and do this i'll just stick with the RAID 0 machine to do the editing.

a run of the mill 7200rpm IDE drive can maintain a sustained output in the low 30MB/s.

A 100Mb/s eithernet bus can sustain about 12MB/s.

even a 5400rpm drive can max out 100mb/s eithernet.
