Rage - should I keep playing?

Picked up Rage for $4.99 on Steam. Got through the first four or five missions and I'm a little underwhelmed. The game looks gorgeous if you ignore the textures mipping in around the edges of the view, but overall it just seems like its very scripted and linear. The "open world" doesn't seem very open, the interface is way dumbed down, the player character always seems to be running, and why the hell can't you look around when riding in a vehicle, since the mouse isn't used for anything else?

So should I keep at it? Does it get better a little further in?

It's been a while since I played it. I think I had to patch it and tweak to help with the issue. My complaint was with the ending, it just kind of.. stopped.

Patch it up, put it on easy, and tear through it. It's worth a play through, imho. If time is limited, play it on easy so you can get through it in a timely manner.

I've read a couple of other comments along the same lines. What happened? Did they run out of money or run into a deadline?

I played through it, can't remember the ending it was so unremarkable. Decent gameplay, story was..meh, and that engine just wasn't worth the 'hype'. Won't play it again.

RAGE is a very dull, generic, soulless game. On a technical level, it's interesting; the graphics are quite pretty and the enemy AI/behavior is cool to watch, but otherwise, there are much better games you could be playing.

There are a few cool enemies and mini bosses. I found the most entertaining part of the game the card game, though.

It's not that long of a game so you could play it. It's not totally bad, there are things like RC weapons and such that you might find enjoyable. I didn't mind the vehicle race-fights.

However, without any spoilers, I will tell you that the game started off as a "5/10" for me and ended as one of the worst FPSes I had played in a while due to the inexcusable ending.

Sounds like my initial impression is widely-shared, lol. Time is short at my stage of life, so I don't waste it on meh games.

So this is a game one should buy cheap, play for awhile, but not finish. That's right in my wheelhouse. 😀

When I see it at $5 I get a little tempted, but then I remember a playthru I watched a long time ago and how generic the game seemed. The dude playing it didn't even play halfway before going on to something else.

Rage was a game to show what they could do on consoles with limited hardware. It is more a demo. I never fired my BFG ammo because it ended so abruptly and there's no "boss".

Is that what's happening when textures are upgrading around the outer edge of the view? I found that very distracting when I moved the mouse quickly.

Yes, that whole idea behind it was to stream in only what you were actually looking at right then. Sounds nice in practice, but it just doesn't work. Especially since it was also supposed to give higher quality textures, but if you go look at them up close they just aren't.

You basically just described what the game is right here.

Yes, I think they were so impressed by the coolness of their idea that they forgot about peripheral vision.

I had fun playing RAGE. I tried twice to finish the game, putting about 8 hours into it each attempt. The game couldn't hold my attention. Once you get to the main city and have access to racing, the storyline just kinda falls off for me and isn't interesting anymore.

The entire game can be beaten in something like 6 hours. I accidentally beat it a second time because I forgot that I beat it the first time, it was that short.

Pretty fun overall though.
