Maybe some of you have read my posts in the pas puzzling over why my FTP upload capability was brutally crippled and unable to work for files over 2k. Maybe you saw the little video I put on yousendit of a 20k file attempting to upload, uploading 12k, and then having the upload speed slowly drop down to nothing (and not uploading any more while dropping down either).

Thanks to these forums, I slipstreamed SP2 into my xp sp1 install. I used nlite to tweak my install. I burned it and did a full new install of XP.

I put on my drivers, firefox and thunderbird for the first time instead of IE and OE. It was a whole new beginning. I even defragged.

FTP worked. I was happy. I started assembling the files for updating my website.

Then windows update hit me.

Now the problem is back. I even sys restored back in time to the point where the only addition I had made to XP was my network drivers. Opened FXP. Yep, uploads.

Ran windows update. Got the 16 odd little patches.

Opened FXP again. Crud. It's broken.

And yes, I played with windows firewall until I was blue in the face.

So.

Argh.

WTF?!

Should I look up potential issues with my motherboard gigabit lan drivers and windows xp updates?

Toggle the Use Passive FTP setting in Internet Options > Advanced and see if that has an effect.

Why don't you install the updates one at a time and see which one borks your system? You can then opt to not install that update in the future.......

Back when Win2K was the top tier OS, my buddy use to go to Windows Update and install everything that was available. Little did he know that after doing this, time and time again, it would mess up the stability of his system. (He had an AMD chipset/dual Athlon MP rig) I told him to only install the critical updates and the ones he knew he should install that were optional. After that, everything went great. :)

Had Win2K3 server with Promise Fasttrak raid card..windows update broke those drivers, took a while till I went back to 2K Adv Server. Promise tech support was craptastic, and told me to low level format and surface scan all 6 200 GB drives one at a time. Bit hard to do when you have 20+ people waiting for you to get the server back up. Thank god for backups and some redundancy.

Meh.

Call MS and ask. It's a free $245 incident if you have a problem with an update.

Stop guessing and pulling your hair out. Unless you enjoy it.
