I couldn't disagree more, myself. I thought the game was great (barring the lackluster ending) and it's probably my favorite FPS in years.

As a case in point, I followed Rage by playing Uncharted 2 and I honestly had more fun playing Rage. It was obviously no match in terms of storyline or characters but the actual shootouts were genuinely fun rather than the repetitive chores that they became in Uncharted.

This is how I feel too.

I tried to warn people ahead of time that this was going to be another run-n-gun corridor shooter, but a lot of people were confused by the addition of some very light RPG elements, the driving, the regenerative health, etc. The game doesn't even have any physics whatsoever that aren't related directly to driving or weapons. If you like really fun mindless run-n-gun corridor shooter mechanics like the original Doom and Quake its a great game.

My only serious complaint is Carmack didn't add more monsters mobbing you all at once so they could get 60fps on consoles. It makes the game too easy to win even on nightmare level. With Doom 4 they're shooting for a more reasonable 30fps on consoles and 60 on PC and will add more monsters. Then we'll get a better idea what the new id tech 5 can really do.

IMO The Dead City and the Jackal's Canyon are the only two interesting places in the game.
