Radion 8800 300MHz core - Feb 02

I did a search and didn't find anything here, so here goes. I just saw this over at Icronic.com that Xbit labs has a story saying that the 8800 with a 300MHz core will be out in 02

"According to one of our unofficial sources, in February 2002 ATI is planning to announce a clone of its RADEON 8500 working at 300MHz core and memory frequency. Now the company is offering two RADEON 8500 modifications: working at 250MHz and at 275MHz. But there is a number of facts proving that ATI has every chance to produce faster chips. First of all, the professional FireGL 8700 and 8800 graphics cards built on the same chips as ATI?s gaming cards support 300MHz chip frequency. Secondly, PowerColor Company mentioned the possibility to supply graphics cards based on ATI RADEON 8500, which would work at 300MHz core clock."

As if it's gonna make any difference....
ATi seems doesn't learn... Superior hardware cannot do anything if they DON"T have a proper Driver... ~sigh.. bunch of idiots... (I mean at ATi)

Just as a slight correction to the above quote, the FireGL 8700 is not running at 300.300 as the imply, it's running at the same stock speeds as the R8500. The R200 cores at 300MHz are currently reserved strictly and solely for the FireGL 8800.

The Drivers are FINE. Have you ever used a Radeon card recently? The drivers work fine. No compatability, performance or locking up problems. Yes there's a minority that can't seem to get things right, but it's usually because of user errors.

A lot of the time, the people who talk sh*t about ATI's drivers have never even used an ATI card. I own both ATI and nVidia cards. I get just as many problems with nVidia's drivers if not more. I agree, ATI's drivers are fine. They're not great but they're not as bad as most people make them out to be.

Having owned a radeon 64mb, I can tell you ATI's drivers are far from fine. NV is much better at drivers than ATI is

According to one of our unofficial sources, in February 2002 ATI is planning to announce a clone of its RADEON 8500 working at 300MHz core and memory frequency.

Take a look at the NV25 spec sheet here*:

- Rumoured 6 Pixel pipelines

- Core freq: 300 MHz.

- Memory: 660 MHz. (eff) ~ 10.5 GB/sec BW, assuming they stay with 128-bit data paths.

- Supports TwinView

- Supports Hardware iDCT

- More powerful T&L unit, to include a second Vertex Shader

- .13u Manufacturing process


R300 specs are unknown as of yet, but the R300 is rumored to be released next summer sometime.

*Not Indefinitely Confirmed.

Being the owner of past and current ATI and Nvidia and Permedia graphics cards. I can tell you that there is nothing wrong with the current ATI drivers.

It doesn't matter if ATi releases the Radeon 10k, if they don't work on those drivers more it will be a piece fo crap.

For those that say ATi drivers are fine, you guys are wrong. According to it's specs the Radeon 8500 is supposed to blow the Geforce 3 Ti 500 out of the water. It doesn't because of drivers. Therefore the drivers aren't fine.

actually, I own a Radeon 64MB and a GF2 ULTRA.
I can tell you that ATi's Driver is POS, period.

I base my video card performance opinion by what I see on my monitor. If what I see makes me happy, then the drivers are fine and any future improvements to the drivers will only make me happier.

I honestly don't understand people who base their opinions on benchmarks, unless it is for bragging rights. "My benchies were 200 higher than yours/his/hers." I can understrand the allure of benchmarks for overclockers who like to be able to measure their system performance improvement after an OC/mod.

I have NVidia and Radeon cards running in my two current computers. The Radeon is appreciably better than the NVidia because the one is an 8500 and the other is a GF2 GTS-V. I think they're both fantastic cards, though.

If it translates directly into FPS then any improvement is nice but 9% is nothing to wet your knickers over. I would speculate that optimization of the drivers by February could add as much oomph as that. Combine both and 15-20% is nothing to sneeze at

Now, if they would just stop using the crap chips in the AIW...

And you Ford vs Chevy people should consider that the Radeon "blows away" the Geforce in features and quality and is cheaper while being nearly the same performance-wise so just because it does not acheive its full potential is not really an issue from a consumer stand point. That's the company's problem which prevents it from making even higher profits by being able to charge more.

The drivers have always been fine for me, speed wise I don't see a problem either. Where NVidia sacrifices quality for speed, ATI puts the quality up, and when you benchmark them, there is a reason why they 8500 benchs a little lower than the Ti5000, same with the 64 DDR cards of the original radeons.
Remember, when ATIs drivers brought down the quality, every nvidiot bitched about it. ATI can't do anything right according to you guys.

equalize the IQs on both cards,then look at the performance, the 8500 gains quite a bit of ground, making it better in most games, only a few games it falls behind, which are driver related.
