Radio stations ditching DJs

In my area a few stations have ditched their DJs altogether and now just play music and have fewer commercials. I'm sure this is a response to competition from satellite radio, but, oh man is it a nice change.

One thing I could barely stand were stupid self-righteous morning DJs. These people come to see themselves as golden gods and think that asserting their uninformed opinions constantly is somehow their duty to the world. If I want to hear banter I'll turn on talk radio......you're a freaking morning DJs who's only marketable skill is the ability to be mildly humorous on a somewhat consistent basis....stfu about religeon or politics and go crank call somebody's grandma or staple something to the intern already.

I used to REALLY hate listening to the radio in the morning on the way to work... just listening to them cracking up over something stupid, laughing obnoxiously for minutes on end...
Of course, I'm not a morning person at all.

That's the second part of what I meant to say. Several high profile stations in the Nor Cal area have already trimmed down their commercials a lot and it's noticeable.

not really. I'm asleep when all the annoying morning radio shows are on, and listen almost entirely to a local college radio station otherwise.

It's a shame for the DJs...they have easy jobs. I think there's only like one primary station here locally that even has DJs on the morning show. The rest buy into the national shows... When I'm home, I only listen to satellite radio...it's so much better.

DJs suck, especially the women ones here in Seattle. Just like most of the women I know they babble on about nothing while I try to listen to music.

There is only one DJ I like here because all he talks about is smoking and he only talks about it in short time periods between some songs

I wish we'd do that here. We have a station that plays sometimes okay music, but has the WORST DJs on it ever, and you're absolutely right, they're completely assured that the station would wither and die without them.

They pulled stunts with an intern and got him to do crazy stuff, and a listener thought it was stupid and faked so he'd call up and say he'd do it too to prove how lame it was, and he got inside a car, and had it crushed while he was still inside it. Totally stupid, and sure enough he got injured, and the local PD/FD had to come get him out, wasting their time because of a radio stunt gone bad.

So many people called in to complain that Clear Channel (owners) and management yanked the DJs off the air until they could figure out what to do, and after a few days they came back, spouting how other stations had tried to hire them away, and that they had used this "opportunity" to renegotiate their contracts, and were now actually making MORE money than they had been, because they're just that good.

Cliffnotes for the lazy:
- DJs suck
- Guy crushes self
- DJs get more $$$
- I'm still poor

I drive to work each morning at 6:30am, or earlier. I listen to one radio show every morning w/ the same 3 people that are great.

Honestly, without that conversation going on giving me something to pay attention to, I'd likely fall asleep. I like the DJs, but some can by annoying.

Reminds me of the episode of The Simpsons where the DJs were replaced by a machine :)

Uhmm. Which ones? I haven't noticed.
I can't wait when they fire those idiots from the morning show on Alice 97.3

That would not be good. The radio stations are already influenced too much by the money they get for playing songs anyways. If commercials (a significant revenue to the station) were gone for good, then you would hear more of what the record companies want to force you to hear. Long gone are the college stations (and alike) that played music that was new and different and "cool". Nowadays it is all force fed by the record company giants. I will not be forced to listen to such crap.

Sure, but they are also playing plenty of classics from the mid 90's. Mazzy Star, Dead Can Dance, Live, Porno For Pyros, etc.

Some of it's good, some of it isn't, but at least there's ONE station now that I can listen to in the morning and not hear people blab about pointless pranks and crap.

Whoever came up with the idea that every single station needs a morning talk show should not be allowed to work in radio, or marketing, ever again.

Dunno about where you live, but there seem to be more commercials than ever around here.

lot of people would probably blame clear channel no doubt. once they become a monopoly we won't have much choice would we?

Makes the future for XM seem brighter than ever.

We have a talk show in the morning on KMOX and the one thing I hated is every week they had some stupid show about losing weight. How obsessed can you be about losing weight. After a while you get tired about hearing all this stupid banter about losing weight. If you are overweight it is even worse.

Then every holiday is the same junk year after year. The same boring junk every year every season. It is just too predictable.
