Radio Shack

All of those "Alienware sucks" and "Alienware versus Dell" threads we're having here lately got me thinking about an idea I've had for many years. I've thought for a long time that Radio Shack is really missing out on a big opportunity by not building their own computers. What they should do is build a line of high-quality computers using all standard components just like people do when they build their own.

Radio Shack did at one point. Well actually Radio Shack was owned by Tandy (and what fine pieces of crap computers they produced). Radio Shack just doesn't have the turnaround needed for computer sales. Things sit on their shelves for years and you cannot make a profit as the prices keep dropping. Radio Shack would have to completely revamp their entire business strategy to make much money off of it.

dullard, I see what you mean, but I thinking Radio Shack could have a single location where they built those computers for customers. The machines would then get shipped to the local Radio Shack store where the customer placed the order. The customer could come back to the local store for tech help and upgrades, rather than having to ship it to another state like with Dell.

Why not Wal-mart? Target? Hell... even McDonalds?

The model that you are proposing is already being done today and has been luke warm at best... *Drum Roll* The Gateway Store.

Of all the PC vendors around today, Dell by far has the best support and profit model.

tandy still owns radioshack.

tandy used to own a chain of stores named "computer city" however, it has since been sold to compusa.
