Do they make an am/fm radio that is designed to be used in a shop where it is around dust and all other kinds of stuff? It does not need to have a cd player, just a plain and simple am/fm radio is fine. Would I be better off just going to walmart and buying the cheapest radio they have and use it until it quits working? This will not be hooked up to external speakers or anything like that.

I did some searching on the net and couldn't find anything that is designed to be used in a shop.

I have a 25 year old piece of junk in mine. Lots of saw dust. Works fine. If you're not dropping it in water, shouldn't matter.

I have an old stereo receiver I picked up at a garage sale for $10 and some bookshelf speakers mounted up high and in each corner above the garage door with zip cord running to them. I like this setup because I can plug an ipod or my tablet into it and listen to Sirius or tunes I have saved.

I really didn't want to spend that much but it may be worth it. When using this plugged in to an outlet, does it have to have a battery in it for it to work?
No idea. I just searched Amazon for a workshop radio.

Yea, I'd just get something from the thrift shop. If it doesn't last(it should), get another one for a few dollars.

This. I bought a $5.00 radio/CD player/clock from a thrift shop for my garage. The CD player is kind of crap and tends to skip, but the radio works great. Since it's a $5.00 radio though, I don't have to worry about it. It's been going great for the last couple of years. No point in spending a bunch of money on something that's going to sit in the garage forever.

And I just want to point out that this garage is not your typical homeowner garage. We live on a dairy farm and we are constantly working on stuff using cutting torches, chop saws, welding, etc.

I may look into the dewalt radio type of setup. I do like the fact that I can use it anywhere. We already have 18v batteries since we have 18v dewalt drills and saws. I just don't like how much they cost.

This is what i would do. If you have big brand cordless tools already, you could get a jobsite radio, but there is absolutely no reason to get one just because. For the price of a jobsite radio you can get at least 10 from a thrift store, and they are not going to break that often.

I have a newer Milwaukee jobsite radio, and am not really pleased with the design, but it has definitely been to hell and back and works pretty good except for a busted screen. The other Milwaukee tools are really great.

edit: Read your later post. I love the DeWalt radios because they charge the batteries, and have big easy to run knobs (The Milwaukee does not charge batteries, although uses their entire range of bats, and uses buttons instead of knobs for tuning/volume). If pawn shops are common in your area you might be able to find one pretty cheap (might be stolen, might be from a guy down on his luck, might be for drug money). When I worked as a commercial electrician people were always buying swapping tools, never did understand it myself, but yeah might be able to find a used one some way.

cheapo powerered computer speakers from a thrift store or even brand new + a cheapo mp3/radio device or phone.

I use an old pair of 2.1 powered speakers in my shed still sound good and are holding up well being out there more than 5 years. Plus using my phone i can hear it if im doing something loud and not worry about breaking yet another phone while carrying it around.

I've got some 12 year old JVC bookshelf system that my brother in law gave me in the garage. Six years out there with metalworking, wood working, painting, 100+ degree heat and bitter cold, still works great. Similar to this:
