Fla. lawmakers approve abortion regulation

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida lawmakers passed a bill Thursday to increase regulation of clinics that perform second-trimester abortions - from rules about sterilizing equipment and employee training to post-procedure care.

Another measure requiring doctors to notify parents when girls under 18 seek abortions was approved by the state Senate, and headed for a vote in the House.

On the clinic regulation bill, the House voted 97-19; the Senate passed the measure Wednesday 30-9. Supporters say the measure will improve the treatment of women seeking abortions. Opponents say its intent is to erode the constitutional right to abortion.

The Senate voted 36-3 on the parental notice bill; the House passed a different version earlier.

A 1999 state law required parental notice for teen abortions, but the law was never enforced and ultimately overturned in 2003 by the state Supreme Court, which ruled it violated teens' privacy rights.

Last year, state lawmakers voted to put a proposed constitutional amendment on the ballot to carve out an exception to the privacy provision in the state Constitution to allow for a future parental notice law. Voters overwhelmingly approved the measure in November.

The bill applies to girls under 18 who aren't married and don't already have children.

The people have spoken.

OK, Rip. Show me how rules presently in place are inadequate in protecting women, and why this legislation is necessary, and not just there to put unnecessary burden on clinic providers to discourage them from providing a legal service.

Rues about sterilizing equipment and employee training to post-procedure care discourage them from performing legal abortions? How's that?

What problem is this legislation solving? Are there no rules about sterilizing medical equipment currently? Can someone without medical training perform abortions now? Why are abortions singled out for specific rules and not other medical procedures.

Just because it passed doesnt make it the right move.
If voters were givin the change to vote, to take away civil rights, that too might pass.
Doesnt make it right.

This is exactly the sort of deliberate trolling that should get you a lock and a ban, Rip.

We're governed by "LAWS", not knee jerk voting.

And, btw, there is no such thing as "pro abortion" people.
There is no reason to want to "kill babies".
Its the right for a woman to decide, if needed.
No woman gets pregnant just so she can later kill the baby.

I'm also voting for a ban here for Rip, he simply doesn't obey the rules and frequently posts a new thread simply to bash a group rather than debate anything, such as many of his recent threads dealing with gays.

Motion for lock and ban. Rip continues to openly ignore forum rules.

Come on conjur, you make several posts a day that are just as much of a potential for a flamefest as Riprorin, and your two sentence opinion following each article is equally acceptable as Riprorin's.

He didn't break the rules, he posted his opinion after the link to the article. At least try to counter him with an intelligent debate, rather than personal attacks and attempts at simply silencing him. I'm sure you expect the same from repliers of your threads.

And conjur stays in his threads and responds to people who participate in them. He promotes discussion and debate, and elaborates on his views. Can't really say the same for Rip. If he replies it's usually just reiterating a passage from the very article he posted in his OP. What? See above.

You have to admit though that part of the outcry against Riprorin comes from the simple fact that the liberals and athiests are much more prominent on this board than the conservatives and Christians.

Personally, I think that there are several members here who consistently are purposefully antagonistic, but I definately don't think Riprorin is the only one, and perhaps even some of his biggest "opponents" are not entirely innocent themselves.

Right, they just get a kick out of aborting fetuses. The moment the woman leave the clinic, they all give each a round of high fives and eat the fetuses.

They also sure as hell care alot more about these women then you seem to do. How about you start offering to adopt children that will be born to impoverished mothers or teenagers who will toss them in the dumpster the second their born.

I would tell you that's why access to birth control and sex education still needs to be improved, but then you'd tell me that abstinence is the only way.

I'm here to tell you Rip. This isn't the olden days where the religous get their way. Instead, it's times we as a society pull the collective heads out of our asses and face that people have different beliefs. You can't tell people to not have pre-marital sex. It's not going to happen.

With you, it's all or nothing. There is no give or take. It's your uptight morale religous beliefs or the highway. Who the hell are you to judge? What makes you so important? Why do you feel the need to preach to those of us that aren't going to change, when I know all you get out of this whole charade of yours is to rub everyone else's face into their 'supposed sin'. If there is a god, leave the work to him. You don't do yourself a favor, nor your religion.

/End rant
