Radeon X800 linux drivers

I've heard bad things about ATI's linux drivers, are they all that bad for the X800? I'm about to get a new card for gaming, mostly in windows but I definitely want to run dual monitors in linux with decent 3d support. Possible with the X800 or should I go with nVidia?
 
nVidia, even their mid-low end can beat ATi's high end under Linux, while nVidias drivers are on about the same level as their Windows drivers.
