just wondering....how does the 3d picture quality of the voodoo5 stack up against the radeon? i'm fairly certain that the radeon has better 3d image quality than the nvidia cards...how about the voodoo5? i'm thinking about getting one (voodoo5), becuz i was quite impressed with my voodoo3 2000 on my backup rig :) comments?

P.S. - how about the kyro2? image quality good?

Be careful buying any 3dfx products. They are out of business and the only support you will get is from third parties. Win XP drivers are available, but why take the chance when both nVidia and ATI are still in business.

I have both a radeon and voodoo5. it's very close and depends on the game and game settings. at this point in time I would consider the v5 and the radeon to be about equal overall :Quality , performance and drivers wise ...... but as time goes on the radeon may get better with driver updates and with newer game due to it's features and the lack of features of the v5

Suggest you dont get a V5 unless it's a really good deal, (around $50 or less is a good deal), other wise, head for the Radeon. Reason being 3dfx is out of business, and there's no longer any support for it. Win XP drivers aren't too great (i've heard problems, lockups, etc) and probably wont get too much better. For a safe bet, get the Radeon.

thanx for the input guys. i am running win98se. for some reason, i don't feel comfy with 2000 or me...so i refuse to upgrade :p the only game i really play is Counter-Strike, and i just hate how my radeon gets murdered by smoke bombs. even if i set my fastsprites to 2...i can still see my fps hurting (and my smoke looks like a black blob). my voodoo3 2000 pci, on the other hand, doesn't even flicker when hit with smoke. thats why i was looking at the voodoo5. i'm hoping for a deal in the $60 shipped range. anyone know how the kyro2 stacks up?

Voodoo 5 is much better than any video card with FSAA. I have radeon 8500, GeForce 3, Geforce 3 ti 500, and Voodoo 5. Voodoo is pretty slow compared to Geforce but 800 x 600 with 4x FSAA is Better than Geforce 3 at 1280 x 1024 with 4x FSAA. I had to change because I migrated to WinXP. But I sure miss my Voodoo 5 picture quality. I have two sitting on the shelf. I am gonna keep em just incase I want to go back to 98se.
With windows 98 se there isn't any game that voodoo can't run. and I have hundreds of games. So if u can get it for sixty bucks, get it!

People have been saying stuff like that right from the launch of the kyro 2, when new games are released the Kyro 2 will be obsolete they say, please look into your crystal ball and let me know which new unreleased games willn't play well on the Kyro 2 so I willn't waste my money buying them? ;)

You said that the Kyro 2 is limited because it has no t&l and then you recommend a video card which doesn't have t&l, hmmmm your not making a very good case for your above comment about the kyro 2 are you?

I have owned both the Radeon 8500 and the Voodoo5, and liked the 2d text sharpness more on my Voodoo5. Its just as good if not better. I don't mean to offend anyone with the 8500, as it has good 2d also, just the Voodoo5 seems slightly sharper to me anyways.

However 3dfx is out of business now, which is a drawback.

Just wanted to add that I picked up a v5 5500 and couldn't be happier with it :).

As somebody else stated, I had a v2 2000 in my second rig and absolutely loved the picture quality. It put my GeForce DDRs' 2d quality to shame, so I was curious and got my current voodoo card.

I play NHL 2002 *religiously* and there is an incredible difference between the GeForce and V5.

It'll last me long enought until GF3's (or maybe a Radeon 8500) comes down in price.

BTW I bought it used and was shocked to see the $299 sticker still on the box :).

It's really painful to watch people jump on the bandwagon with their "wise" posts. The V5 had the least compatibility problems of any videocard I know of. I play the latest demos without any problem. That's the proof of it.
The Radeon might look sharper because it can use anisotropic filtering, and trilinear where the V5 usually can't. However the Radeon has occasional glitches and FSAA throws its compatibility right out the window unlike the V5. I don't care what features the Radeon has, it didn't prove as good practically as the V5 to me. I also found 2D slightly worse on the Radeon.
No way would I sell the V5 for $60 ... you'll have to hope for a person that doesn't really use their V5 and who is gullible enough to believe the scare stories.

Get a V5 then, you'd have to spring for a Radeon 8500 to top the V5 in CS. Even a V3 would be fine.

CS doesn't need a powerful vid card at all, 8500 is super overkill.

The V5 is an awesome card with FSAA second to none. However in 3D gaming it is getting a little long in the tooth. I had mine tweaked out at 185MHz, Beta 8 6000 drivers with HSR, and the 22-bit hack going, 2X FSAA (which is as good as Nvidias 4X). It ran fast and looked great at those settings, I was shocked when both an Inno3D and Gainward Geforce Pro looked as good in 2D and 3D, I really wasn't expecting them to match up. And they were much faster, although nobody can compare with Voodoo 4X FSAA. I run my games at 1024 x 768 and the V5 didn't have quite enough juice to run 4X at that resolution. I would say image quality is a close call from a Radeon, V5 or Inno3D/Gainward Geforce. If I was going to do it all over and left Nvidia out, I would go for the Radeon 7500, price for the performance is impressive and you still have current support.

Innoka, its not wise, its common sense.

The company has been out of business for over a year now, there are no official drivers for XP, nor will there ever be, not to mention future OS's.
The unofficial drivers for can be made to work, but I had a hell of a time doing it.

And if a new game comes out and shows problems with the V5, there wont be any fixes on 3dfx's side.

Common sense.

IMO if you want a cheap card to play CS on, grab a GTS-V or a regular GTS, depenmding on the price.

Radeon VE? Nah, you got the cards confused my friend. You should by the Radeon LE and tweak it to include Hyper Z. The Radeon VE is an evil thing that deprives us from having T&L.

Yeah? Well it doesn't. nVidia's rendering quality is better than ATi's.
