Radeon VE (7000?) best Drivers - having probs

Just got ahold of this Vid Card on a trade for one of my backup systems.

first time messing with the Radeon Vids and was wondering which drivers are prefered or newest.


the ones that are installed now are the newest ones from ATI's Site.
but i ran Counter-Strike and it was only showing around 40 FPS??
and the TNT2 Ultra that i pulled from this system was getting around 70-80 FPS.

thought maybe it was drivers.

Guru3D,com is showing 4.13.9021:
and ATI has 4-13-01-9031 (Radeon 7.70) - Which is installed now.


if not the Drivers,are thier any tweaks i should know of on this card?

I'm use to the Nvidia Cards.


Specs:

Win98SE
Athlon 800
256Mb Ram
Radeon VE 32Mb AGP
4in1 Drivers
All other Drivers are up to date

Do you have TruForm enabled?
If I recall correctly, the more recent drivers enable TruFrom by default on the R7XXX series And it causes a decent performance hit compared to the 8XXX running TruForm.

Make sure you get rid of all the traces of the nvidia drivers.

I'm not really familiar with that particular model of Radeon, but the guys here and at rage3d could probably give you some good information on it.

The 6071s should work fine. As Rand says, make sure you disable truform in both the driver control panel (if you can) and in the game and also make sure that you have vsync disabled as well.

I'm using the 6071 series drivers on my WinXP machine that has a Radeon VE. They offer a minor speed improvement for me over the previous drivers. Anyway, I'd recommend being sure that all traces of the Nvidia drivers are gone, since that's probably what's causing the slowdown.

can't seem to find the Trueform option in the Vid control panel settings.
i'll check the game options for it.

as for the 6071 drivers,that for WinXP.
i'm using Win98SE in this system.


i'll check again for the older Det drivers that was in here then reinstall the Card again after clearing everything out.

Ok i went ahead and rechecked to make sure everything was gone that had anything to do with the Det Drivers.

Registry,INF Folder etc etc.

reinstalled drivers and got same results.

removed all ATI Drivers and tried an older set of drivers,then the 9031 drivers again with the same results.


also checked for the TrueForm option in the game and Vid settings with no luck.
V-Sinc is disabled as well.


Any other suggestions what the problem may be?

Also,what FPS should this card be getting in CS?
a bit better then the TNT2 Ultra i would imagine.

Try moving the CounterStrike config and let it create a new one. Also make sure that you've patched the game to the latest version.

Also make sure you're not using FSAA and anisotropic filtering in your driver control panel.

BFG, CS is patched to the correct version.
i didn't get the ATI Patch however if its still needed with the 1.4 Update.

and tried removing the Config file to let it rewrite it with no luck.

Also, FSAA and anisotropic filtering is disabled.

IIRC the latest version of Counterstrike automatically enables truform on ATi cards which degrades performance. I think the option is something like ati_n_patch or n_patch to disable it.

BFG10K, Thanks for that info on the TruForm.

1.3 did infact enable it default.

i put in the TruForm command and the FPS jumped from 40 to 100 (100 single player,70-100 Multi).

the actual command is ati_npatch 0
