I just reformatted and installed XP a few days ago. I put in the newest Radeon64 Driver (posted october 13th I think).

Anyway, CS slows down A LOT. fps varies from 15 to 75, but most of the time its in the 30s and 20s. It is simply awful and I can hardly play it :(

all the settings are the same as under win2k, where I used to get low 60s all the time.

anyone have similar probs?

Yea I have the 64mb radeon vivo and when I switched to Xp from 2000 performance was so crappy that I reformatted and switched back to 2000... BUT I dont remember my counterstrike being that slow.

Have you disabled TruForm in CounterStrike?
That can have a hefty hit on performance.

I have the original Radeon64, not the 8500.

a7v133
256mb PC133
Duron 750
Maxtor HD
etc....

Its a good system, what bothers me is that CS ran fine under win2k.

Btw, I just benchmarked Serious Sam, and I got 35fps average at 1024x768, 30 @ 1280x1024. All the options were turned to the max...so it might not be a driver issue. I will try reinstalling though I don't think that'll do much good.

By default ALL Radeon cards run with TruForm enabled in CounterStrike even the original radeon cards. Their forced to do TruForm in software emulation and hence take a huge performance hit.

I don't know exactly because I don't personally play CS. It's something your supposed to type in... I remember that much. I'm sure someone here must know as it tends to be a frequently posted problem.

yay, good old google, never fails me :)

It turns out it was just as you suggested, Truform was being emulated.

The command to turn it off is "ati_npatch_0". I guess I didn't have these problems under win2k since I was using old drivers (from may or march I think) and these winxp are from october.

Thanks a lot :D
