here's the problem: I have all the latest drivers for everything, including the latest via 4-in-1 and the latest radeon beta. I'm running win2k, t-bird 900 on a k7t pro2 with a radeon le at default clock (148/148) but with all hyperz settings enabled. I am getting horrible framerates in q3. ex: 'normal':80fps 'high quality':74fps 'high quality'@1024x768:55fps

WHY are my framerates so low?!?!??! most reviews are saying like 130-140fps for 'normal'

i had same problems. seems like that ATI just can't program win2k drivers :( decided finally go to from a LE back to my v5

On Anand's LE review, at 1024x768x32 normal he gets 65.8fps. This is a faster cpu and benchmarks don't have sound enabled. So a slower cpu, sound, high quality, win2k takes away 10fps or therabouts (not bad IMO!).

Enabling hyper-z doesn't help Q3 because you are likely running in opengl and hyper-z is on by default for open-gl, just not d3d.

Try overclocking.

The lower resolutions are still much slower and that might be caused by the drivers.

right, the high res is ok, except that its not high enough fps to be good for playing (not high enough worst-case fps, that is)
so, what I'm concerned about is that anand's review shows 130fps for 640x480 normal whereas I get 75-80. shouldn't I get like 110 at least on my setup

Yah that one's an I don't know.

At first I thought that maybe since the win2k drivers aren't quite up to par with 98 that in lower resolutions (where cpu and drivers matter more) was causing the performance differennce. But I looked at Anand's article which uses old radeon driver and the win2k one is just 1fps behind in Q3A.
