Hi, I've got an ATI built Radeon 8500LE 64MB (OEM)video card....It's got Hynix HY5DV641622AT-33 (3.3ns) ram. That means it's overclockable up to 300 mhz...Default is 230/230.

but i can't o'clock the RAM beyond 250mhz........the screen gets unusual effects .......like noisy effect ....

what is the problem?

do i have to flash the bios to overcome this problem?

help.....?

Ever heard the phrase "YMMV" - Your Mileage May Vary?

Overclocking is never guaranteed. But given that I had heat issues with my old 8500 at stock speeds, get some more airflow around that puppy. Pics or wordy description of your case and fans?

Memory on a videocard has latencies and voltages applied to it just like RAM in a mobo. All these variables are set in the videocard's BIOS and/or circuitry. So even if a memory is rated 3.3ns capable of running(1000/3.3=~303Mhz) it depends on whatever the setting is in the BIOS. If the 8500LE's bios has set that mem to run tight timings and/or lower voltages then it won't go past a certain speed in your case 250Mhz. That's why some of us do Voltmods on our cards or play a lil with our bios trying to squeeze some juice out of it.
But i really hope am wrong and that it's simply a heat issue so you could oc and have fun with your videocard!!!

cheers :)

Had an 8500 250/250? a while back. 3.0ns mem IRRC. Would only do the dance at 300/300 when 333 was theoretically possible. Same with the 9800 I have currently. 3.0ns that will do only 315 or so reliably. BTW: no volt modding on either. Also the ram was BGA. I think alot of the 8500s especially the LE models came with TSOPs.

The 128MB Radeon 8500s (275/275) came with the then new-fangled BBA DDR-SDRAM. The GeForce4-Tis were the 1st to drop TSOP and go with BBA RAM.:)
