so guys what do you think they'll come up with after the 9xxx series ? I'm really interested because I liked the numbering of the 7xxx series (as 7 is my favorite number) and I like the 9xxx series numbering too . I think it's time to get rid of the "HD" moniker as it's more than long in the tooth imo and change it to something more riveting . at least that's my opinion

I just posted in other thread I personally see QHD because like HD it is catching on quickly in marketing for displays.

I agree that the HD prefix needs to go, it's nonsense.

I'd welcome a system with letters and digits combined, similar to the naming system of the GPUs generations earlier (R700, R600, R520 etc.). E.g. Radeon R-900 would be a high end part, R-600 a midrange part. In the next cycle, they'd be R2-900, R2-600 etc. Then this could go on until R9, and reboot with a different system again

Personally I would like something completely new once in a while.
I highly doubt they will ditch the Radeon brand, though.

Probably just going to see a complete reset like we did from X to HD, which should provide another 10 generation (or more) for card names.

Radeon QHD 970

...

That name sounds terrible haha.

Perhaps

Radeon XHD 970?

You guys know QHD is lower than HD, right? They'd want to use UHD, referring to a 4K resolution.

Mostly likely, we'll get some random and nonsensical letter designations.

XD 1XXX

Or give me a laugh and bring back XL, like my ol' X800XL, but flip it to the XL800X.

I do not care about the prefix. But it would be really great if the number would be more telling about the card performance and how a card is placed in it's generation.

An easy to apply numbering scheme could be based on the Unified Shaders with a suffix to distinguish between cards that have the same number of cores, but which are different in other ways.

An example based on Radeon HD 6xxx series:

Instead of:
Radeon HD 6450
Radeon HD 6570
Radeon HD 6750
Radeon HD 6850
Radeon HD 6950

we could have:
{some prefix, even Radeon HD} 160
{some prefix, even Radeon HD} 480
{some prefix, even Radeon HD} 720
{some prefix, even Radeon HD} 960
{some prefix, even Radeon HD} 1408

Could start over at double digits:

Radeon 10 series
with individual models in the 10 series looking like:
Radeon 10.1
Radeon 10.2
Radeon 10.3
etc

While technically yes, Quarter-HD is lower than HD EDIT: this is actually denoted with a small q, didn't realize that - so it's qHD, but you'd also it is being used erroneously with UDH as Quad-High Defintion, ie 4x720.

Once a term sticks with the public, it's hard to shake. I've already seen UHD and QHD used in forums that focus on media such as movies.

EDIT: I remember when HD was 720P and TrueHD was 1080P. Oh marketing nonsense.

I suggest the "Quadeon" name as Quad HD and Quad xFire

Three performance ranks:

Quadeon Rookie
Quadeon Gamer
Quadeon Legendary

Enough with numbers already !

I think radeon XD or XT would sound cool as a prefix.

You people really need to get a hobby if all you have to do is wonder what will AMD call its next graphics cars.

As someone who like Kings, Queens and crowns etc I think it should be called 'Queenion Thumper 12'.
All cards could then have crown type logos and some small semi-precious stones in the bejewelled shroud. A sort of meld of classic design and contemporary bling.

Apparently, cards could be called AMD Radeon R9-xxxx, R8-xxxx etc.
So all the Radeon HDx9xxx successors would get the R9 moniker for example.

What exactly the numbers will be, is unclear, but I suppose it only makes sense to begin low again. So the flagship might be called "Radeon R9-1000".

I'd hope the reboot the naming after the 9k series.

I really wanted to buy a 9850 for my living room PC just as a throwback to the Radeon 9800 Pro.

Why must AMD make me hate them!? WHY!!!!
