Radeon LE & Counter-Strike problem

My Radeon LE is wonderful, I like it a lot. The only thing I wish I could change is the fact that on Counter-Strike when someone throws a smoke grenade and a lot of smoke is pouring out, my frame rate drops like a rock. Anyone else have/had this problem and possibly have a fix? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

isn't this the purpose of the smoke grenade lol, to make fps go down.
if the smoke grenade don't do a jack then what is the point of having it

There is an option within Cs to turn down the smoke grenade sprite complexity. I think the default is 0 or something and 1 is the lowest complexity. Make it .85 or so...that may help. .85 complexity looks the same as the 0 complexity, just less of a framerate hit (at least on my machine Voodoo3 3000). Good Luck!

its not an issue with all radeon cards, its an issue with all cards
the smoke grenade is meant to cover someones view so that they cannot see you. However, a side effect of this is your frames crapping to hell. If you dont want this to happen, then you can change the sprite complexity of it so it'll be a simple texture and you wont get any slow down at all. However, if you do this, then it will be totally opaque and it'll be like lookin at a wall. So the best thing to do is find a compromise, and do what jedimaster said. put it half way, so that youi can still see through the smoke, but it wont destroy your fps

This problem sems to affect Radeon cards more than other brands. There was a petition being signed to get ATi to fix it and I believe there were some driver releases that tried to address the problem. If in doubt, make sure you have the latest drivers installed.

if you want CS to run flawless ... you must buy a voodoo card...

kyro also had some problems, but they are corrected now with the last drivers..
the frame rate drops when smoke is around but not to unplayable level..
geforce 2 have also some problems when there is a little smoke...

it is a case of some programing trick that works ok with voodoo cards but not with other cards...

I heard about this problem before also - glad that it has been re-posted I was asking for advice regarding changing from nVidia to ATi and guess what - the only game I really play is CS...could be a major factor in my decision.

How much difference does the change to 0.85 make for the smoke?

Does it pretty much solve the problem? Is the slow down very bad?

i have a pro and my FPS drops to like 20 with smoke i have 4x FSAA enabled @ 1024 x 768 and smoke is the only problem. Without FSAA it runs great.

Make sure your smoke grenade sprites is set to 0.0000000 (or something like that, it's default). There was an issue with Radeon, but I've never seen it. Your computer might be to slow, time to upgrade! woohoo!
Seriously, I have no problems.

I love smoke grenades, and I wish you could buy more than just one at a time. The're great for slowing down an assault, blinding AWP snipers, and fycking up slow computers.

If you guys are having different experiences with the Radeon at least list the driver revision you are using and any other particulars that might narrow down the problem ;)

I'm using the newest beta drivers available for my Radeon. 7140s. My comp's down right now for a bit (on the family 'puter right now). It's a bit under the weather right now, so I'll try the .85 trick as soon as she's back up. And no it's not old. :) It was a Duron 800, but it'll soon be a T-bird 1 GHz (hopes for an AXIA or AVIA). Thanks for all your help, everyone.

Also, couldn't this be one of the LE's quirks? Supposedly they're less than 100% Radeons, so to me that would make some sense. Anyway, just a thought.

OK, with my voodoo 3, when someone throws a smoke grenade, fps drops a lot. On my bro's rig (duron 850, GTS, 256MB RAM), when a smoke grenade is thrown, nothin' happens. So it's not a Radeon issue, nor a voodoo issue, nor what I ever you would like to see. It's just that some cards are faster and some are slower. Period.
