Radeon HD3850 X2 ???

If it's 2x 3850 512's then it might be worth taking a look at especially for someone that doesn't mind vmodding. You could just about get 3870 X2 performance for a lot less $$. If it's 256 x 2 then I think 9600GT SLI would be a better option.
 
It's a very strange product idea, since the 3850, 3870, and existing X2 all use the same chip. The only difference is in the clock speed, and RAM attached. The 3870X2 already comes with DDR3, so... there's really no place for a "lower, but still extreme model" to fit into the product line.
 
As a product itself, I don't find it particularly interesting. However, if true it would indicate ATI's commitment to multi-gpu, which would mean increased and improved driver support for Crossfire and CrossfireX.
 
Could be a marketing-driven product, like '512 meg' low end cards. With only 256M per GPU this would be a solution intended for low resolution gaming... Which is not what you need a dual GPU card for. Might show interesting benchmarks on Crysis at 1024x768 or 1280x1024 when paired with a high end CPU though.

Considering what the 9600GT and new lower 8800GT pricing is doing to demand for the 3850 and 3870 I could see this being a marketing driven way to offload GPUs, for sure. Considering this will be vying for the #3, 4 or 5 performance slot I doubt they're thinking large e-peen premium on this SKU -- under $300 street price seems very likely.
