Radeon HD 7970 into GHz Edition by bios

So a new bios justifies the $50 price hike back up to $500? :/ They would have been better off leaving it at $450 and making the gtx680 look bad.

Though I understnad AMD's pricing, I agree with you. AMD had three months of puffing their chest with the 7970, then the GTX680 came and took the wind out of their sails (talking in metaphors today, I guess 😵 ). They'd probably get 'hot' again by undercutting Nvidia. But, something tells me that neither one wants to get into a price war.

but that's exacly the point of the bios....

get a non-Ghz edition for 450 buck, bios it...
than your card have better/equal value than the Gtx 670

Wouldn't standard overclocking be the same?

imagine the bios like an "amd aproved" overclock.... it should make the card as stable as stock settings
 
custom cooled regular 7970 + bios = GE without the crazy noise or heat.

But then again if ur the type to flash bioses, you would have manually OC it already and gain nothing from this.

Our system booted into Windows without incident after this little bit of cosmetic surgery. However, the driver wouldn't recognize a supported card, as witnessed in the following GPU-Z screenshot

Probably has something to do with this quote on the article above: "We say “almost completely” because there are indeed certain hardware differences between the original and Gigahertz editions. The newer cards have improved sensors for more accurate PowerTune adjustments—but that’s the only physical difference. In all other respects, the upgrade should provide the Gigahertz Edition benefits to the older standard 7970 GPU:"
 
Just did this to my 7970 and it works. Advantage of this is I don't have to worry about any overclocking software. I really don't need more than this at 1920x1200.
 
I didn't know that, back when I had my 6950 I know sapphire and a few others had a switch that could be used to unlock the shaders. It wasn't all the models though.
