Radeon HD 7950 with 1366x768

Is it smart to get the MSI or Gigabyte Radeon HD 7950 ( or rather any high end new video card) now and use it on my 1366x768 monitor and THEN get a 1080p monitor? Or will using the 7850 somehow ruin my current monitor or just not even work with this resolution. The only other possibility is to get the monitor first and then the video card, but I find getting the video card first and then the monitor is better.

  • i5 3570k
  • 850w power supply
  • 8GB RAM
  • New (as in recentl model) ASUS Mother Board

You can, but it'll be overkill for that resolution if you don't get a new monitor asap. An HD 7850 is plenty enough for 1080P.

Will it ruin my monitor though if I keep it for about 5 months? or 6?

No. How in the world would a video card "ruin" your monitor?

Powermoloch's advice is sound. Just get a 7850 and call it good. You could even bump it up a notch: Just get a 7870 and don't worry about it.

How many freaking threads are you going to create on the same topic? Are we up to 4 by now?

A 7850 will suit you well at 1920x1080, I'd say that's not a bad combination.

The HD7950 is overkill for that resolution unless you plan to upgrade your monitor in the near future (and hence will need the additional GPU power).

I agree that 7950 is overkill for 1366x768. I'd still recommend it though, will last a little longer as a good 1080p card than a 7850 will. And 1080p monitors are almost free.

4 threads and counting. Get whatever you want and stop making threads. If our advice wasn't kosher enough in the past 3 threads, why would it be good enough in the 4th?

I can understand the Op and his inability to make a good choice,i am sorta in the same situation between either buying a 7950 and ocing it to heaven,or just going all out and buying the best 7970 period and clocking it as high as possible and just leave it alone.

Op,i have a 7850 at 1050/1450 and for the moment i am at 1280x1024 being a higher resolution then 1366x768 and i can recommend a 7850 based off excellent performance i am currently having with BF3,disable msaa and i bet its gonna be smooth sailing for the most part for 1080p.

Get a 7950 if you can afford it but only IF your buying a 1080p monitor, but if your not gonna get one, stick with the 7850,disable msaa and enjoy 60+ fps in all situations on your current monitor on all of the maps period.

If you're going to OC get a 7950 and save the $$$ difference for another upgrade down the road.

Yeah i am thinking about that but that new Matrix 7970 by Asus is a intense card that seemed to hit 1300 core in every review, there isn't a 7950 that can touch that and its the only 7970 i would consider just to attempt a 1300 core overclock.

Thats waterblocking time if you want a 7950 to hit 1300mhz... and i've only seen one member at overclock.uk that did it... and the cost to do it wasn't relative enough to the performance to make it a viable solution. If you're looking for insanity, get a proven 7970 overclocker like the Asus Matrix 7970s and go to town on it.

I forgot to mention that i have both hd 7950s and 1 7850. The HD 7850 is plenty for all the games I throw at it @ 1600x900, especially BF3 on ultra settings with MSAA, it was smooth as butter.

I'm going to get the 7950 and later on get a 1080p monitor, maybe like 6 months after. I don't think getting the 7850 is a good idea because I would have to upgrade it sooner than the 950 with a 1080p monitor. Is there any good monitors $150 or below that you recommend? I'm guessing their prices are going to drop soon, the ones I have my eyes on. Also, the 7850s have a great deal now, but I have a feeling that if I buy one now with the Never Settle (4 new games!) deal, their prices are going to drop right after I buy it. I guess I'll be able to enjoy over 60 fps with my card until I get a 1080p monitor.

And maybe we can enjoy no more threads made relating to the same question ;)

Maybe it has been mentioned somewhere in this thread or others, so pardon me if that's the case.

Do you need the video card right now? If not, why not buy BOTH video card and monitor together (say, in 6 months time)? That way, you will also benefit from any further price reductions or new generation cards by then.

That's true, but I've heard that newegg holds sales during the Holidays that hardly ever get better. I read on a blog that someone bought a card during the holidays and it hasn't been that cheap since. Also, I'm a teen and I don't want to buy stuff in one sitting, my parents don't like it. I can get the video card now and then for my bday ask for the monitor so the money spending is spread out. I'll see if the deals are amazing. If not, I'll stick to your idea. The monitors I have my eyes on are
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236052 23.6"
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...e=LCD-Monitors 23"
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236100 21.5"

These specifically because they are ASUS and have hundreds of amazing reviews, all 5 eggs.

Also, without overclocking my i53570k processor which is stock at 3.4 Mghz, will I be able to overclock any of the cards very much. I'm new to overclocking. I'm not even sure what being "bottlenecked" is

It depends on what particular hardware and the time intervals you are looking at between buying but, generally speaking, computer components go down in price over time. Just look at how much the 78xx & 79xx cards used to fetch 6 months ago.

It's just a pity to buy the video card now when you don't need it yet. By then, who knows what better deal you could have gotten for the price you paid for that video card.
