Let's just speculate for a bit, what will happen if cayman xt is faster than gtx580 by a fair margin, ~15% faster on average and actually beating it in twimtbp games. Its a much smaller chip, power use will be good in comparison and according to AIBs the MSRP is well below gtx580.

when will it hurt NVs bottom line? that's the biggest factor of interest for me. because if NV loses it will price drop like it has been and still have black ink on the quarterly income.
I can't see them hurting even if they lose out in the consumer market when they dominate the high profit HPC sector.

If that happens chances are they won't need too drop them much as AMD will just charge more for their cards and take the extra profit.

+1 epic post :)

from a guy that probably already has a card and is testing it as we speak.

release date is the 24th obviously :) heheh

A little clarification; first - i have no new cards atM. No vendor gives reviewers a lot of time to evaluate new products under NDA.
:'(

And (most importantly) ... there are *two* AMD NDAs ending shortly. It depends in which part of the world you are in as to which day an NDA ends. Mine is Pacific Time; it will be different from Europe's date. i'm sorry for any confusion that i may have caused here.

Yes.

You are trying to give AMD credit for NVIDIA being late. The 5870 lost to the 480. That generation is over. Now we are at 6xxx vs 5xx. So far the 580 has a really, really big lead over the 6870.

That's only true half the time.
One would hope one companies high-end card would be faster than another companies mid-range card. Remember, the 6870 is mid-range, not high-end. But NV's GTX580 is high-end. That's like comparing the 6970 to NV's GTX460.

Yes it is, I blame TSMC's 40nm process for Nvidia being late, not a generation behind.
8 months later they were still faster. AMD is lucky Nvidia didn't get there full Fermi from the start, they would have been slaughtered.

Now with the gtx5xxx, they are even faster.

I look at it that AMD is a generation behind Nvidia. It looks like even their refresh/new arcitecture is still just competative with Nvidia's original chip from last year.

uh huh, so amd's decision to make a smaller gpu that was more easily manufactured on a flawed tsmc 40nm process doesn't factor in at all? That's ludicrous.

also, you guys need to say "single gpu crown" since up until a few weeks ago AMD had the single card crown, and now it is kind of a joint leader (though gtx 580 is clearly superior to 5970).

28% of all statistics are made up.

true. also, as yogi berra likes to say "50% of this game is 90% mental"

From a person allegedly in possesion of cayman:
  • Cayman die will be much smaller than generally expected, we are talking Cyprus like size
  • Performance several percent below gtx580
  • Power use quite high for such a small die
  • Major problems with drivers, especially for AA modes
It seems that AMD continues their small die strategy, hopefully the driver problems will be resolved
- size around 380
- performance - true
- average gaming power draw will be slightly below 200W

yes, but the 5970 was the same gen and didn't lose to the 480. plus, it wasn't as loud/hot/power hungry. I'm glad you're back b/c this is a fun conversation, but at least try to uphold your end of it.

Yeah, because the 6970 was released? yeah, k, just stop

no, he's right, you can't have it both ways. amd beat nvidia to the punch with dx 11 gen 1, but nvidia has already started the refresh party and they're currently all alone. As I said last month, if amd gets it out in a timely manner then all is good, but if they limp in a day or two before xmas then it's really a q1 2011 launch because they'll have missed the xmas shopping bonanza. really, what's the difference between post-xmas and 3 months post-xmas? sure it's there, but face it nvidia is executing this round and amd is... not.

Actually AMD started the "refresh party" with the 6870.

Yes, the man with no plan B.

I still think that this has worked out pretty well for nvidia. once gtx 460 came out they were back in the game, and currently they have amd bracketed at the middle with gtx 460 768 on the low/mid side and gtx 570/80 on the high end. amazing what a little pressure to perform did for them.

Actually AMD started the "refresh party" with the 6870.

that's true. regardless, I think that nvidia is in a much stronger position atm and will remain there until amd comes out with a card that beats a gtx 580. with nvidia's noise/heat/power beast tamed this round amd will actually have to compete on performance.

My guess is that the 6970 comes in between the GTX480 and GTX580 in performance, and costs around $400-$450 with 2GB VRAM. The 6950 would probably be slightly slower than the GTX570/480 and cost ~$300.

So you are trying to say, that the 6870 was released to combat the GTX580 ? And was "not" released to combat the sales of the GTX460 ?

Because if you are. I don't think so.

The fighting partner for the GTX580 is on its way. And it is "not" the HD 68xx series.

He's playing a game. For example one year ago:

58xx vs. 2xx and the 5870 (5970) had a really, really big lead over the 285 (295).

Ultimately this a meaningless statement - one with no substance and lacking context (i.e. shortsighted) - just like his statement.

They're honest mistakes.
Hey are you trying to be smart by making sense? Where is the FUDs?

Are you saying that all the insights are either mistakes or makeups? How dare you! How can you be so logical? How can you be so reasonable?
