Keep in mind that the iMac uses mobile Core 2 Duo processors because desktop versions would be too hot for it. So it's not surprising that a hot card like the 4850 would have trouble. Especially since Apple is so anal about their computers being sleek (read: not enough room inside) and quiet (read: not enough airflow).

its an Apple software issue guys, move on, nothing to see here, except more anti-AMD spam by wreckage + OCguy feeding the flame.

You clearly did not read the article. They say they ruled out software and that it's a hardware issue with the 4850.

tsk tsk Louisssss. You should have read the article. Specifically where it is indicated that the freeze ups also happen under a Windows boot partition having not much to do with Apple software issues. Not ruling out software entirely though. I "could" be that the ATI drivers for "both" OS X "and" Windows is the issue. Though the exact same symptom does seem to take away any credence that idea may have. Lets wait and see what further investigation brings, and stop taking the Iraqi minister of information approach. :D

then where are all the issues with normal windows users? i haven't seen any major complaints with "normal" windows users + 4850

I decided I didn't want to take the risk. I just called and was able to cancel my order.

Is the 4850 mac version identical to the PC version? I really don't know about that these days, but back when, there were specific versions of graphics cards for macs. I don't think that applies anymore because these systems are intel based. So, I dunno.

It's not quite identical. Rather than the components being on a PCIe card, they're on smaller MXM modules that fit better with the peculiar layout of the 24" iMac. Furthermore the firmware is EFI64 rather than BIOS. The actual GPU die is the same though (although it's probably a binned part for lower heat/power)

If I had to take a guess, Apple is probably letting the 4850 overheat. They always seem to skimp on the cooling, as of late.

Actually in the comments to the original article there were complaints about 4xxx series failures.

i guess there happens to be no AT'ers with 4850's with that same mass hardware failure...

What does that have to do with the problem? If it's not here, it doesn't exist?

FWIW, I received my 4850 equipped iMac yesterday.. and I've put it through the paces. I played HD Quicktime Trailers for a solid 2-3 hours, played the entire Nine Inch Nails - Beside You In Time HD-RIP in 1080p MKV, and on top of it, got in a few hours of EVE Online.

Not a single hiccup, stutter or lockup. So far, I don't appear to be affected. I wonder if the later batches avoided this disaster..

Well, my iMac was shipped out early (24th) and I wasn't home for FedEx to deliver it. I'm going to the FedEx service center at 6pm to pick it up. Wish me luck!!
