radeon directx8 hoopla

i need a definitive answer, because everywhere i go i hear different comments. just how directx 8 compliant is the radeon? which features is it missing? can it do much of the stuff that the geforce3 can do (with dx8)?

How definitive?

Some of the features of the Radeon ONLY work with DX8 (the 4.1.0.0 upgrade for the DVD player for example).

The benchmark 3DMark2001 only works with DX8 (and the Radeon gets a reasonable score but does not have the features of the GF3 which scores much higher in a comparable system). Some newer games require DX8.

ATI finally heard the myriad complaints and are releasing DX8 drivers at a reasonable pace.

I (finally) have no problems with my Radeon 64 VIVO with DX8.

If I'm not mistaken some later drivers require DX8.
