Can anyone tell me briefly the differences in performance between the Radeon VE and LE models?

Thanks

The LE is much better. The VE lacks a hardware T&L engine and only has 1 rendering pipeline, while the LE has 2. The only advantage of the VE over the LE is hydravision, but for gaming, it doesn't come close the the LE.

So you would not recommend the VE......

Given a straight choice between teh Radeon VE and the NVIDIA Geforce2-MX200.....which should I go for?

Light gaming......mainly 2D apps

Radeon VE. It'll be faster than the MX200 and will likely have better 2D quality.

I'd go with the LE, especialy if you can find one that has the HyperZ enabled (some of the newer ones are). If your a light gammer you might as well enjoy the experience. And it has the T&L feature.

I have the LE and I am totally pleased with it .
Games look pretty decent and the 2d windows graphics are sharp.
It's a great deal for the money.
(But it doesn't have the Hydravision)

Same recommendation here. I have a Radeon LE, and its a pretty nice gaming card. Very overclockable, too. As for the MX vs the VE, in your circumstances i would recommend the VE. Driver issues notwithstanding, I think in your situation, Hydravision would count for more than the mediocre gaming capabilities of the MX.
