Radeon AIW 8500DV doesn't see camera via firewire

I installed the card, no problems reported.

When using the Ulead software which came together with the card, it doesn't "see" my camera (Sony DCR-PC120E).

What I already checked:
- Windows reports the 1394 firewire port works correctly
- tried both firewire ports (break out box and the one on the card)
- started first my camera (also even in play back mode) before launching Ulead
- started first my camera (also in play back mode) before launching my computer
- tried to change the global settings in Ulead to 'TI 1394' and 'MS 1394', but both types reported no camera was detected
- analog camera connection and capturing via SVHS works fine

My computer:
PIII 900 MHz - 160 Mb RAM - 40 Gb HD - Windows ME

I know that my camera is a rather new one (is that the reason).
Do I need to install other drivers, do I need to use Premiere or
another soft? What goes wrong ? Who knows the answer ?
Hercules didn't answer this question yet. As soon as they do, I'll post it here.:(

My camera is 'operable' when using Premier through the firewire (using SW stop, play, rewind commands) - but I'm not capturing Anything... I swear I saw some issue with the capture back when I bought the card (before I had the DV camera), but I can't find it for the life of me. Maybe I'll try the Ulead SW instead of the (better?) Adobe SW.

Anyway, is this the same issue you're having - not able to capture, but everything looks right?

I have a similar problem - when in the capture mode, I see a blank "preview" screen but can click the controls which will control my camcorder.

It's a problem with the ATI drivers, not your camcorder. I'm pretty sure this is it, because I happened to have a firewire card, which I installed and my camcorder (a Canon Optura Pi) worked perfectly. I'm wondering if it's this problem reported at ATI's website: Click Here

Luckily, firewire cards are pretty cheap, so it may be your best solution. I updated all of my ATI and Via drivers, and still no luck.

Lovely.. a $300 video-card that goes through the troubles of including firewire on both the breakout box and the card itself, yet it doesn't work with the Via chipset...

Guess I start looking into selling this, avoiding ATI from now on, and buying multiple cards just so I can have something that works properly.. *grumbles*

Damnit, I *HATE* when I don't listen to recomendations of people who know better.

According to ATI, it's not their fault, it's VIA's, and they apparently fixed it with a patch.

Serves you right for buying a Via product - they always have issues with one peripheral or another *cough CreativeSoundBlaster cough*

I use this card on VIA and ALI chipset MB's and it works great. I did have to upgrade my BIOS on the VIA board. I'm not jumping on you but next time you upgrade anything on your system make sure you look for patches for everything on your system! You have to get your whole system ready for the upgrade, not just the OS. That is why you see so many ATI, Nvidia, VIA..ect stink posts here. If you still have problems getting it running look at the forums on rage3d for help. They have a 8500DV listing in the forums. Hope this helps you out.

Wish I could say that I was unprepared - but as I bought all the components at the same time (er, within a month) and the LAST thing I did before assembling was to grab every 'current' driver for all of my stuff. I didn't know the capture didn't work for a month after building because I didn't have a DV camera capable of using the functionality.

For whatever it's worth, ATI does have a new capture driver, Display driver and Multimedia Center release - all within the past 10 days. The VIA 4n1 was also updated in that time. I've got these now, and will install them sometime today to see if anything changes. With the exception of this capture issue, I have no complaints - and actually REALLY like the remote.

Ok, I made the last post first, then went to check out these forums (new to me). The 'fix' for Capture seems to be one of two things (depending on the tweakability of your MB bios).

You either need to Disable AGP/PCI Postwrite (location will vary depending on your bios)

Or buy an external firewire card (about $30)

There's a LOT of valuable info over there though, so thanks for linking it - much appreciated.

*Edit* 3 hours after initial post - I just got home and tweaked the bios (Soltek SL-75DRV4 board) so ALL of the PCI Post Writes = disabled and capture worked like a charm the first time. Time to go to bed though (I work overnights) - hope this helps out someone.
